Indeepa remains unbeaten at half way mark

SL Youth Chess Grand Prix 2020

Dimuth Indeepa Samaraweera of D.S. Senanayake College drew his game with Vinuda Shenal Gunathilake (Royal College) to lead Group ‘Y’ with 4 ½ points at the half way mark of the Sri Lanka Youth Chess Grand Prix 2020. Samaraweera is enjoying a one point lead against Vinuda Shenal and Lalindu Sathmina of Isipatana College. They are tied for the second place with 3 ½ points.

In a closely contested Group ‘X’ D.S. Senanayake trio Maleesha Savindu Weeratunge, Pesandu Liyanage and Senuka Ahangama are tied with Nabil Nazar of Gateway College for the top position. They have three points each.

The Inaugural Sri Lanka Youth Chess Grand Prix 2020 started at the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka on Saturday (7) and will progress till August 18. The event, which is conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka will offer cash awards worth Rs. 55,000.00. The next phase of the Grand Prix will be held from 15 to 18 at the CFSL Head Quarters at Nugegoda.

The event is conducted according to a new format with 20 leading Under 14 chess players in the country competing in two groups of equal strength. After the round robin stage the winners and the runners-up of the two groups will advance to the knockout stage where they will compete in semi finals and the final.
