In defence of AKD

“Who is this new minister of Agriculture? I heard he is very good” These transpired when I met an Engineer domiciled in Canada, in 2004 while I was on a foreign tour. I said I was not sure of his comments.

Then he further explained. When Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD) became the minister of Agriculture in the government of Chandrika Kumaratunga, minister himself had visited an eminent professor of Veterinary Science, who happened to be his wife’s maternal uncle. According to him AKD visited the professor’s residence, and requested for professional advice to increase milk production. This professor being a strong UNP supporter, was elated by the young ministers visit and accepted a highly responsible position. Many ambitious plans were outlined by this academic but couldn’t implement due to political intervention by others in Government (not by the minister). He thanked AKD and resigned.

There is a lot of food for thought!
