Ill effects of current crisis on lives of youth
Sri Lanka will experience the ill effects of the prevailing economic crisis on the lives of youth in a couple more years, JVP led NPP MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament on Thursday.
“Today three undergraduates share a single rice packet. Both female and male undergraduates suffer many hardships as they cannot afford to eat. How could they concentrate on their studies on empty stomachs? This is a very unfortunate situation. The government should pay urgent attention to the crisis in the universities. These are the youth that are going to lead this country some day in the years to come. They today suffer from malnutrition,” Dr. Amarasuriya said.
She said that traveling costs and lack of facilities in the hostels have discouraged many students to come to the universities. Many female students stay at their homes because they cannot find food in their universities or hostels. The ill consequences of these unfortunate instances will be seen in a couple of years’ time,” she said.
