IGP C. D. Wickramaratne yesterday (22) appeared before the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) and made a statement on the death of a protester in police shooting at Rambukkan recently.

The IGP arrived at 11.30 am and gave a two-hour statement.

When the IGP arrived at the HRCSL yesterday morning, a number of trade unionists and civil society activists protested against police brutality.

The Kegalle Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), the Superintendent of Police of the Rambukkana Division and the Rambukkana OIC have been transferred on Thursday following the shooting on 19 April

Transfers were to facilitate impartial investigations.

The IGP has instructed the CID to take over the investigation into the Rambukkana incident.

The police have said they were compelled to open fire on the protesters as the latter tried to set a fuel bowser on fire.
