House to move joint resolution to remove SLC office-bearers today
By Saman Indrajith
Party Leaders yesterday (8) decided to move a joint resolution in Parliament today to remove the SLC office-bearers.
Parliament said the resolution will be debated and a vote taken on it.
The Opposition requested that a resolution be moved to remove the SLC office-bearers with the support of all 225 MPs.
Earlier in the day Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe told Parliament that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had been misled by his close associates with regard to the prevailing crisis in cricket.
Making a special statement in Parliament, Minister Ranasinghe said he did not agree with the court order that had suspended the Gazette, which announced the appointment of an interim committee for Sri Lanka Cricket. He accused the Attorney General of having acted in such a way as to protect corrupt Cricket officials instead of defending the Ministry.
Alleging that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had been misled by some of his close associates, the Minister urged the President to choose which side he was on––Roshan Ranasinghe or Shammi Silva.
Opposition and SJB Leader MP Sajith Premadasa proposed that the Parliament adopt a motion to send SLC office-bearers home.
Chief Opposition Whip and Kandy District MP Lakshman Kiriella called on the Minister of Sports to go before the Supreme Court against the Court of Appeal’s interim order at issue.
A special party leaders’ meeting was convened at the Speaker’s office at 1.30 pm yesterday to make a collective decision regarding Sri Lanka Cricket and it was decided that the matter would be referred to the House today, enabling all MPs to express their views on the motion moved by the Opposition Leader.
