House committee wants higher salary for CIABOC head
The Public Finance Committee has declared that the salary of the Chairperson of the proposed Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) should be appropriately high.
The parliamentary committee said so when the issue was taken up on Thursday (16) under the chairmanship of Dr. Harsha de Silva, MP, sources told The Island.
Sources said that the committee discussed salaries and other facilities provided to members of the CIABOC expected to be appointed in terms of the recently approved anti-corruption law.
The Management Services Department has pointed out that the salary scales offered were in line with those of Court of Appeal judges. Lawmaker de Silva has pointed out that the Parliament had the right to decide the salary scales of members of the commissions.Dr. de Silva has asked the Management Services Department to prepare a fresh proposal and to secure the approval of the Cabinet-of-Ministers.
