Health authorities yesterday (24) asked children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those undergoing medical treatment to take precautions against unusually high temperatures in the country.

Earlier, the Meteorological Department stated that the Northern, North Central, North Western, Eastern, and Uva Provinces, as well as the Hambantota and Ratnapura districts would be the worst affected areas.

The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) has advised the people in the aforementioned categories to limit their exposure to sunlight and remain hydrated. Adults had to drink at least 2.5 litres of water a day, SLMA President Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne said.

Dr. Ariyaratne also urged school administrators to keep students away from non-essential outdoor activities, providing them with indoor or shaded areas for play instead. He has also advised that young children be encouraged to wear protective hats or caps when outdoors.

Employers have also been urged to consider the needs of their employees and make necessary adjustments to work schedules or provide appropriate facilities to cope with the high temperatures.

Sri Lanka has been facing high temperatures in recent weeks, leading health officials to issue repeated heat warnings. The SLMA’s latest advice emphasises the importance of taking necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of heightened heat.
