High egg prices forced drastic drop in cake production during festive season: Bakery owners

Cake production during the current festive season had dropped by 75% compared to the corresponding period in 2023, President of All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association (ACBOA), N. K. Jayawardena said yesterday.

He said that the drop was due to egg producers hiking prices during the festive season. The price of eggs had increased to about Rs 60, he said.

“By 01 April, the price of eggs dropped rapidly, but by 05 April the price started increasing. Only several large scale bakeries could produce large quantities of cake. .
