Heavy rains displace 2,300 families in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu

Over 2300 families in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu have been displaced by the heavy rains that have been continuing for three days.

Most of these families have been affected by adverse weather three times this month. A large number of houses have been flooded. Several roads in Vavuniya have been inundated. A number of schools in Vavuniya and Kilinochchi have also been flooded, and they remain closed. A large number of paddy fields have also been inundated. A few weeks ago over 7,000 acres of paddy fields in Mannar had been destroyed by heavy rains and floods, Assistant Commissioner of the Mannar Agrarian Services Department, A. Merin Kumar said.

Northern Officials said more people were likely to be affected as rains were expected to continue for a few more days. Fishermen too have remained on land for four days.
