A Sub Committee of Public Accounts (COPA), dealing with health sector administration, has declared that the Health Ministry is directly responsible for the rapid deterioration of the public health sector.

The Parliamentary Watchdog Committee has found fault with the Health Ministry for failing to take tangible measures against those responsible for corruption, irregularities and mismanagement, as exposed by the Auditor General.

MP Maj. Pradeep Umdugoda (retd) chaired the COPA meeting. The Parliamentary Committee pointed out that the health administration continued to give lame excuses. The Health Ministry top brass was questioned how a female doctor caught in 2022 for allegedly pilfering surgical equipment had done so for a 10 years. Pointing out that has happened at the National Hospital, COPA alleged that frauds and irregularities had been facilitated by the failure on the part of the Health Ministry to implement proper counter measures.
