The local fashion scene was very much in the spotlight…in the year just gone by – 2023 – and Brian Kerkoven was there in a big way, with his unique creations and also helping aspiring models come into the limelight.

Brian heads two model organisations – BK Model Management, and Walk with Brian Kerkoven Academy – as well as being the National Director for several international beauty pageants.

He has had beauties, from Sri Lanka, participating in Top Model of the World, Miss Grand International, Miss Intercontinental, Supermodel International, and the guys doing the needful at Mister Global Teen and Mister International.

Most of Brian’s participants have excelled at these international events, with Daham Dias claiming the title of Mister Global Teen 2015.

The year 2023 has been quite eventful, says Brian, especially with the opening of Kamil Hewavitharana (Limak by Kamil) own store, Vuqe, where Brian’s creations are now available for purchase, and, of course, his participation at Global India Couture Week, in Dehli.

“It was my very first show in India and I enjoyed myself very much.”

Brian’s segment was called ‘Transparency.’

Says Brian: “When I sent Sadani Peiris to the Top Model of the World contest, I designed an outfit for her, keeping in mind that she is a ballerina. I used this inspiration to do the rest of my collection, and called it ‘Transparency’.

“Everyone talks about transparency in their day-to-day conversations, but how many really are? So, my outfits were somewhat transparent and they were all done in white for the Delhi event.”

The models were all Indians, said Brian, adding that he wish he could have taken a few of his models to let them share in making his collection even greater.

Brian added that BK Model Management is always on the lookout for fresh talent, both Sri Lankan and International.

In the past, Brian has showcased his creations at the Malaysia International Fashion Week, also in Spain, London, and New York.

Talking about 2024, he gleeful said that he is looking forward to creating more clothes for the store and to come out with variety…to suit everyone’s mood, body and occasion.

For the record, Brian started his modelling career as a model for Ramani Fernando Salons.
