‘Have you given up, Mahinda?’
The letter of Dr. Upul Wijayawardhana, speaks of the popularity in coming back to power which is arguable. The Yahapalanaya was a miserable failure, one reason being Sirisena aligned with Mahinda to oust Ranil Wickremesainghe who was the Prime Minister and ultimately the matter was settled in courts, maintaining Ranil to continue. Mahinda coming back to power was not because of his popularity but as there was no other party the voters could look up to. Having come to power with two-third majority, he failed Gotabaya by presenting a questionable set of ministers and officials who faced charges of corruption, fraud etc. when the pledge of Gotabaya at the Presidential election was to have an honest educated lot to run the government.
The recent reshuffle of a few Cabinet ministers saw an efficient honest Minister being removed from a vital ministry, Dallas Alahapperuma. Some appear to think, this was done as he would have objected to the agreement with New Fortress Energy, LNG project. Now, the government is facing severe accusations. Unfortunately, there appears to be no genuine national leader to bring back decent politics to usher in prosperity, harmony and peace. Many young, old and rich are leaving the country seeing there is no future for them in this once called “Pearl of the East with thousand gifts”.
