Hasaranga heroics in vain as Bangladesh win first ODI
Sri Lanka put up a remarkable fight back in the first ODI after being 102 for six chasing a stiff target of 258 but fell short by 33 runs in Dhaka yesterday.
All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was nearly a star for Sri Lanka keeping the fans interested after the top order had collapsed.
Hasaranga’s arrival changed the equation as he cleared the boundary with some big shots. He reached his half-century off 31 balls with three fours and four sixes.
The eighth wicket partnership between Wanindu and Isuru Udana was worth 62 runs but both batsmen fell in quick succession as Bangladesh secured a comfortable win.
Hasaranga made 74 in 60 balls with three fours and five sixes.
Mehidy Hasan finished with four wickets.
Earlier part timer Dhananjaya de Silva was the pick of the bowlers finishing with three wickets.
The off-spinner bowled cleverly breaking a threatening 57 run stand between Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal for the third wicket. The Bangladeshi captain attempted a premeditated sweep shot but realizing the length of the ball tried to adjust but was too late. In the very next delivery, Dhananjaya accounted four Mohammad Mithun with him also attempting a sweep first ball. Both batsmen unsuccessfully reviewed the decisions. At 99 for four half way through the innings, the wheels were coming off for Bangladesh but a crucial 110 run stand between Mushfiqur and his brother-in-law Mahmudullah Riyad settled things for Bangladesh.
Mushfiqur top scored with 84 runs that came off 87 balls with four boundaries and a six. Half-centuries from Tamim and Mahmudullah helped Bangladesh to a competitive 257 on a wicket batsmen were struggling to time the ball.
There was uncertainty about the game yesterday morning after the bio-secure bubble was compromised with three individuals testing positive. Fast Bowling coach Chaminda Vaas, seamers Isuru Udana and Shiran Fernando had tested positive. But a second PCR test taken on Saturday night showed both Vaas and Udana were negative and the series went ahead.
