Gypsies: Very much in the spotlight

Yes, they do miss their legendary singer, composer and entertainer, Sunil Perera, and they say that he can never ever be replaced, but…life goes on for the Gypsies.

Sunil, who would have turned 70, on Wednesday, September 14th, was, sadly, a Covid victim, and left this world on September 6th, 2021.

In memory of this great artiste, a special musical video, titled ‘Sunil Aye,’ was released, on YouTube, on September 6th.

A song, called ‘Gallu Para,’ will also be released shortly, to commemorate Sunil’s 70th birthday.

It was the last song recorder together by Sunil and Piyal, with backing vocals by Mariazelle Goonetilleke and Wathsala Goonetilleke.

Since taking over the reins, his younger brother, Piyal Perera, has been able to keep the Gypsies name, alive, and, considering the present situation in the country, the band is doing reasonably well in the scene, here.

Most of their engagements, so far, have been at family nights, where the whole family turns up to enjoy an evening of good entertainment.

“This is an interesting scene, and we enjoy doing it,” said Piyal.

Of course, he did mention that big dances are a bit scarce, these days, but added that the band is looking forward to the forthcoming festive period, with a positive mind.

The Gypsies were featured at the prestigious rugby ball, held in Kandy, and will be seen in action again, at another big event, scheduled for September 23rd., at the Wasana Nature Resort, Kandana.

‘Ojaya Night’ will also feature Chitral Somapala.

“We are also looking at a trip, Down Under, later this year, but nothing has been confirmed, so far,” said Piyal
