Govt wants to make Sri Lanka self-sufficient in liquid milk as cup of milk tea hits Rs.100
While Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage stated yesterday that the objective of the government was to make the country self-sufficient in liquid milk, the All-Island Restaurant Owners’ Association on the same decided to increase the price of a cup of milk tea to Rs. 100.
While participating in an awareness programme on the promotion of liquid milk in Gannoruwa, Kandy yesterday, the minister stated that although the government provided lands to investors, they have not been able to initiate production of milk due to certain issues.
“No-one would want to invest in the country if issues like this continue to inconvenience them. The Agriculture Ministry will intervene and solve these issues to reach the goal of making the country self- sufficient in liquid milk,” he said.
The price of a 400g packet of milk powder was increased by Rs. 250 with immediate effect on Saturday. A 400g packet of milk powder is now being sold at Rs. 790.
