Govt. to regulate private tuition classes soon – Minister Dr. Raghavan

State Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Suren Raghavan says that the government will soon regulate the conduct of private tuition classes in the country.

Speaking to journalists in the East, he said that the private tuition enterprise was worth 65 billion rupees but the Ministry of Education did not have any mechanism to monitor its activities.

The State Minister acknowledged that the Ministry of Education had no knowledge of the teachers teaching in private tutories, that is their subject mastery, professional qualifications, and their moral character.

He bemoaned the fact that in some tutories teachers were talking politics, religion and racism to promote their own personal agenda.

“We will introduce a licensing system to qualified teachers to teach in tutories. We will also regulate the tuition fees levied. For instance, an A level Science student who attends tuition classes for all three subjects has to pay 9000 rupees per month as tuition fees. This is too much and unfair. Most private tutories have no basic facilities. Students have no proper seating and have no access to even drinking water and toilet facilities,” he added.
