Govt to punish sexual bribery

The goverment is planning a new a law to make ‘sexual bribery’ a crime while also strengthening provisions against sexual harassment.The cabinet of ministers approved a proposal this week by Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to criminalize all forms of sexual harassment and introduce a new section to punish ‘sexual bribery’ according to a government statement.

Police said sex related crimes sometimes go unreported.

“Most of the time they don’t come and complain regarding this kind of matters if something happens they argue and deal it by themselves,” Police spokesman Nihal Thaduwa said.

The fear of social stigma is deterring reporting crimes.
