SJB parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake urged the government to reveal to the country the list of food items that contain toxic properties injurious to the health of the people.

He said the government should focus attention on SLSI Director-General, Siddhika Senaratne’s statement that cancer causing aflatoxins are found not only in coconut oil, but in some other foodstuffs in the market as well.

The MP called for immediate legal action against SLSI officials who shirked their responsibilities and gave the green light for such toxic food items to be sold to the public.

“The SLSI is an important standards body created to protect the rights of consumers and not to shield companies feeding poison to the people”, Attanayake stressed.

He said the lives of the people are more valuable than companies that market toxic products. However, the government still remains silent on the issue. This gives the impression that these errant companies are more valuable to the government than the lives of the people.

Officials responsible for permitting toxic food products to be sold to the public should be dealt with in terms of the law, the opposition parliamentarian reiterated.
