The Government Medical Officers Forum (GMOF) has requested Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella to make public a confidential report on kidney transplant racket involving some medical doctors.

In a letter dated 04 January addressed to Minister Rambukwella, GMOF President Dr. Rukshan Bellana has said that the report on the inquiry conducted by the then Director General Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Jayasundera Bandara in 2016 had been suppressed by interested parties.

Dr. Bellana urged the minister to release the report prepared on the instructions of the health ministry.

The GMOF official said that the inquiry was launched in the wake of Indian intelligence services alerting the then government to a major racket in kidney transplants involving Indians and other nationals in Colombo.

Dr. Bellana said that if the incumbent dispensation continued to protect those who had been involved in the racket, the GMOF would launch a public petition campaign at the Narahenpita Abhayarama temple and also consider resorting to legal action.

Pointing out that following the exposure of the kidney racket, the government suspended such operations in private hospitals, Dr. Bellana asserted that the country was denied substantial revenue.

Dr. Bellana said that a comprehensive inquiry should be conducted in that regard to expose the culprits (SF)
