The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) too had decided to support the hartal organised by over 1,000 unions and civil society organizations, GMOA Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando said yesterday.

GMOA members will hold demonstrations opposite all hospitals across the country between 12 noon and 2 pm.

“Meanwhile, all doctors will work wearing black bands and will carry out outreach initiatives to educate religious and community leaders about the current crisis and the way out,” he said.

If the government and other political parties did not take measures, respecting the wishes of the people, the GMOA would commence a continuous strike, Dr. Fernando said.

The GMOA Secretary said that they had held a discussion with leaders of the hartal campaign on Wednesday. “During the discussion, all sides understood that all unions must come together to ensure that the people’s will is enacted. The GMOA Executive Committee yesterday decided to support all peaceful demonstrations that will lead to an end to the current corrupt rule.”
