Gateway College wins Boys’ and Girls’ basketball titles
Basketball players of Gateway College showcased an impressive display of unwavering talent, spirited teamwork, and determination that set them apart from fellow competitors at the Inter International School Basketball Championship organised by CIS Colombo.
In the Boys’ category where 16 teams participated, at the group stage, Gateway beat Elizabeth Moir 59-17 and Stafford International School 42-5 but lost to CIS Colombo 46 – 42. Having advanced to the final stage, Gateway’s grit was evident when they beat Lyceum International School Nugegoda 72-55 at the quarter-final and Asian International School 59-43 at the semi-final before overcoming CIS Colombo 79-74 to become champions. Gateway’s Bilal Shafraz was named the Most Valuable Player and Marlon Peter was recognised as the Best Defensive Player.
Gateway Girls, in their group games, beat Wycherly International School Gampaha 45-16 and Asian International 44-9.
At the quarter-final, they easily beat CIS Colombo 51-13 but edged out Horizon College at the semi-final 64-62. At the Championship finals, the Girls’ team demonstrated their prowess on the court by overcoming Lyceum International School Wattala with a final score of 56-51.
A significant contribution to the team’s success came from excellent performances by Sarini Mallikarachchi who was recognised as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and Mayumi Liyanage who earned the title of Best Defensive Player.
