The government’s attempts to limit activities that take place in the Galle face Green is a sign of desperation and fear, education secretary of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP), Pubudu Jagoda says.

Jagoda said that the Galle Face Green was the symbol of the protest movement of 2022. It had become successful because a large number of people supported them, Jagoda said.

“There is no point in attacking the symbol of the protests without addressing the root causes of our problems. People are struggling to survive and what the government is doing will only make matters worse.

In the coming months and years, things are bound to be more unbearable,” he said.

The FSP education secretary said former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had allocated a place on the Galle Face Green for protsts.

“Gotabaya also tried to suppress dissent by limiting where people could protest. That didn’t work out well for him. Things will not work out well for the Ranil-Rajapaksa government either unless it make drastic policy changes,” he said.

The Cabinet of Ministers banned entertainment events and political meetings at the Galle Face Green with effect from April 20.
