From Apple Green to Dynasty…
Music lovers – probably not the present lot – would certainly remember the name Apple Green.
They were big in the local scene, decades ago, and were considered one of Sri Lanka’s top outfits.
I remember Apple Green scooping up quite a few trophies at The Island Music Awards, held in the good ole days, when professionalism, in the music scene, was at its best.
The Island Music Awards was Sri Lanka’s version of the Grammy Awards and was a much-looked-forward-to event in the music scene.
Apple Green was led by Rohan Mendis – another excellent musician.
Rohan subsequently left for the States and is now domiciled in that part of the world.
As a musician, Rohan continued to be active in Los Angeles, California.
In fact, four years ago, he formed the band Dynasty – Rohan (leader, bass and vocals), Jehan Mendis, also of Apple Green fame (drums and vocals), Shay Jayah (guitar and vocals), and Janaka Samaraweera (keyboards and vocals).
Within a short while, they found fame coming their way and, before long, Dynasty was considered to be the best dance band, in Los Angeles, for Sri Lankan audiences, performing at all the top-billed dances and events, held in Los Angeles.
The going was really good for the guys, but then came Covid-19 and the whole world is still feeling the heat of the pandemic.
With Covid-19 destroying the ‘old normal,’ Dynasty has not been seen in action, since March 2020.
Says Rohan: “At that time, in the old setup, we also had added two well-known musicians to the mix – Tony Samaranayake and Sherwin Jayah.
“However, since there is hardly a hint of the return of ‘normalcy,’ anytime soon, I decided to restart Dynasty, with the original foursome.”
And, we in Sri Lanka, would have the opportunity of seeing Dynasty, in action, this Sunday, March 28th, at 8.30 am (Sri Lanka time), while those in Los Angeles could check things out on Saturday, March 27th, at 8.00 pm..
“We decided to do this show as a tribute to all of our fans, here and abroad, for their support throughout the years. Hope you can all join us to have some organic musical fun.”
Rohan also mentioned that Sherwin Jayah will be a part of this scene, doing a guest spot.
This is one event music lovers should not miss as it would be a golden opportunity for you to taste the difference!
