The National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC), Sri Lanka, proudly commenced its one-year project, “Waste Audit Framework Creation and Waste Baseline Data Collection in Sri Lanka,” funded through the Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP). The inauguration ceremony, held at Waters Edge, Battaramulla, on 27th November 2023, with the esteemed presence of Ms. Thilaka Jayasundara, Secretary of the Minister of Industries, as the chief guest.

In collaboration with technical support from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), United Kingdom, the project focuses on two key components: developing a Waste Audit Framework and conducting comprehensive Waste Baseline Data Collection. Working closely with the Sri Lankan government and stakeholders, NCPC Sri Lanka aims to align the waste audit framework with governmental objectives while simultaneously implementing an island-wide waste characterization program, covering rural and urban areas.

Gamini Gunasekera, Chairman of the National Cleaner Production Centre, emphasized the significance of sustainable production practices and the role of the OCPP initiative in reducing waste pollution during the inauguration. Stressing collaborative efforts between industries, governmental bodies, and environmental scientists, he highlighted the need for lasting solutions.

Ms. J.M. Thilaka Jayasundara, Secretary of the Ministry of Industries, commended the government’s commitment to sustainable industrial practices and applauded organizations like NCPC, Sri Lanka, for spearheading initiatives contributing to national development while minimizing environmental impact.
