Former Sri Lankan Army Captain killed in Ukrainian conflict against Russian troops

Three former members of the Sri Lankan Army including a Captain were serving in the Ukrainian Army were killed during an attack by Russian troops on December 4.

Captain Ranish Hevage, who retired from the Sri Lankan Army, had joined Ukrainian forces in March 2022. He had previously served in the Sri Lankan commando regiment.

Reports indicate that Hevage was honoured by the Ukrainian Government for his bravery on the battlefield. He held the position of commanding officer within the First Special Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

There are accounts suggesting that approximately 70 Sri Lankan former soldiers are currently enlisted in the Ukrainian Army.
