The Disaster Management Centre (DMC)had taken steps to salvage four buses caught in a flash flood in Kegalle on Sunday, DMC Director Maj. Gen. (retd.) Sudantha Ranasinghe told The Island yesterday.

A 16-member team had been stationed at Bulathkohupitiya Road, Kegalle, he said.

Heavy rains in the Maha Oya basin could lead to floods, he warned.

Floods can occur at Alawwa, Divulapitiya, Meerigama, Pannala, Wennappuwa, Negombo, Katana, Narammala and Dankotuwa divisional secretariat areas in the next 24 hours, the Irrigation Department has said.

“Water level of the Kelani River, too, has increased,” Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management) S. Sigeesawara said.
