Fisherman caught with protected sea turtle

The Iluppakadawei Police on Thursday evening (12) arrested a fisherman in Mannar who had been keeping a protected sea turtle, weighing 25 kilos, to sell for meat.

The 43-year-old suspect is from Devanpiddi. and has been killing turtles and selling their meat. The police also found tanks, the suspect had built behind his house, to keep captured turtles.

Police said they had handed over the turtle to wildlife officers and the suspect would be produced before the Mannar Magistrate’s court. (DR)
