First test to judge bona fides of new govt.
Those citizens of this country with even a mite of brain power and use it, will agree that this new government should NOT issue MPs duty free vehicle permits. They sell them at exorbitant prices. This fact of giving vehicle permits or not will definitely be the first test for the new government that is sworn in today – 20 August. The qualification I give above – people with a mite of brain power – is because thousands among us seem to have no brain power; no ability to consider issues and are more asses and morons; they’ve voted to Parliament the-proven-to be- corrupt and even two accused of murder who are travelling in Black Marias to take their seats in Parliament.
Watching the arrival and departure of political VIPs from the old Parliament building in Galle Face, Fort, one witnessed huge limousines of the highest price ferrying some who could not even own a push bicycle before they won Pradeshiya or Parliamentary seats. Admittedly, they need cars, so the government should buy moderately expensive cars. We as a nation are poor and most struggle with poverty; but those who we send to make laws for us, compete to get the most luxurious limos. Judging by their living standards we are a rich nation, more nouveau riche with its derogatory innuendo.
Things have to change and change must start right at the top. The President has demonstrated simplicity and integrity of purpose in several ways. Let him get those newly elected and newly appointed to follow suit. We have to make sacrifices to save our nation. We ordinary people manage with little and live difficult lives. If MPs and top bureaucrats do the same, at least simplify their official lives, state coffers will swell and not be constantly drained.
The public is docile now but when badgered even a dove can peck or a pet cat scratch. Consider Belarus, Hong Kong. Worms turn!
