First in the Firing Line
By Lynn Ockersz
Always among the brutally hunted,
Children the world over are on the run;
Wrenched from caring parental hands,
They have been first in the firing line,
And this has been the case,
Since the dawning of historic time,
When the human adult took centre stage,
A being blessed, it’s said, with a moral sense,
But who made of bloodshed a way of life,
Pockmarking Planet Earth with mass graves,
Wherein human bones rattle in eerie protest,
Over innocent blood maniacally shed,
Much of it that of children made homeless,
By their wily elders’ undying power lust,
But will the human use his reason even now,
When it’s all too clear that the might of the Gun,
Has taken him to the brink of collective suicide?
