The Navy’s Firefighting Unit sprang into action to douse a fire that suddenly broke out in a fishing trawler at the Dikkowita fishery harbour yesterday (29).

Responding to a distress alert disseminated by the Coast Guard Station Dikkowita, the Command Operations Room (West) promptly dispatched two Navy firefighting teams along with two fire engines to the location to extinguish the flames that were engulfing ‘Lanka Matha’ (IMUL-A 0691- CHW) – a fishing trawler moored at the fisheries harbour.

The combined effort of the Navy firefighters, Colombo Municipal Council Fire Brigade, personnel of Coast Guard Station Dikkowita and a group of people from the Dikkowita fishery harbour helped douse the blaze and save other vessels.

Seven persons, injured by the flames, were rushed to hospital with the assistance of the Coast Guard Station, Dikkowita.
