Field Marshal warns of another major revolt on 09 August
SJB Gampaha District MP Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka told Parliament yesterday that he and his party would join the final battle to get rid of corrupt rulers from this country on 09 August.Participating in the debate on Emergency Regulations, Fonseka said that incumbent Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena could become the President of the country once there was a regime change after the launch of the 09 August struggle.
Fonseka called on his fellow MPs and security forces not to protect corrupt politicians. “I call on the police and security forces personnel too not to protect corrupt politicians. They should not forget the fact that the protesters fought for the country. Their objective is not getting presidential or prime ministerial posts. They want to see an end to corruption. They are our relatives. So, don’t attack them. Don’t spoil the pride of the Sri Lankan army with such attacks.
There are ideological and policy differences among the groups protesting at the Aragalaya site in Galle Face. They should unite for a single objective. People must understand that this prevailing political culture cannot be changed by removing one or two corrupt politicians. I call on the government and President Ranil Wickremesinghe not to abuse the security forces to act against the protesters,” the Field Marshal said. (SI)
