Amid recent weather fluctuations, health authorities have warned of a potential increase in the spread of viral infections.

Senior Consultant Physician Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama addressing a press briefing on Monday evening (16), attributed the trend to temperature variations and shifting weather conditions. He said they could lead to severe consequences.

Dr. Wijewickrama urged people to seek medical attention urgently if they experienced persistent symptoms such as a sore throat, cough, runny nose, and fever accompanied by aches and pains.

He asked people not to self-prescribe antibiotics but to consult medical professionals for proper guidance.

Dr. Deepal Perera, a consultant pediatrician at Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH), said there had been an increase in upper respiratory tract infections. There has been a slight uptick in children seeking treatment for symptoms like sore throat and fever. However, there was no reason to panic, Dr. Perera said.
