Escapes from evil eye/mouth

Published

There were a couple of letters on the subject cited above in your recent issue, but none of them had written as to what actions are taken to wade off or protect. Here are some which are prevalent among those who believe in such hocus pocus.

1. Some burn chilies and place the tray in front of the house.

2. Some fix a mask of a Devil on the front wall

3. Christians, I believe, fix a wooden cross on the front door.

4. Some grow thorny trees at the entrance to the house.

5. In Buddhist houses, chant Pirith in the morning, and Catholics, I believe recite the Rosary.

6. Some place a basin of water with white flowers to bring prosperity and wade off evil.

These are superstitious beliefs coming down from generations, especially in Sri Lanka, India and may be in other eastern countries.

It will be interesting to hear from readers of other actions taken on this subject.
