While cricketers of leading Colombo, Kandy and Galle schools have opportunities to make an impact in the game, the District Under-19 tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket ensures that talents in rural areas are taken care of and do not go unnoticed.

As a result of these events, several young players have broken through to the Sri Lanka Under-19 side and from thereon to the national cricket team.

In this year’s competition too, Western Province is packed and already 12 games have taken place with Colombo North Zone 1 in Pool A and Colombo South Zone 2 in Pool B coming up with some impressive performances.

North Western Zone includes Puttalam, Kurunegala Zone 1, Kurunegala Zone 2, Matale and Jaffna.  Jaffna competing in the North Western Zone has put on notable performances.

Northern Province is joined with North Central Province and teams are divided into Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu and Vavuniya.  Southern and Uva Provinces are combined and Hambantota, Monaragala, Rathnapura and Matara are part of this group while Galle has got two teams.

Similarly, Central and Eastern Provinces are a combined team and Nuwara Eliya, Ampara, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Kegalle compete here while Kandy has three teams.
