Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, Senior Professor Sujeewa Amarasena, said that 11 resident students of the Medawatta Hostel had been arrested by the police for locking up the sub warden, in his room, around midnight on Sunday (18).

The sub warden was locked up after he had reprimanded the students, who were reveling after the World Cup final, for disturbing other students who were studying for their exams.

Professor Amarasena said that university security officers had rescued the sub warden and the incident had been reported to the police as the students action violated the provisions and clauses, stipulated in Act no 20 of 1998, on prevention of ragging and violence in universities
