Election monitor accuses govt. of doing its best to postpone polls
By Rathindra Kuruwita
No one has a right to deprive citizens of their voting right, under any circumstance, Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director of People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) says.
Addressing the media yesterday Hettiarachchi said the government could not postpone elections under any circumstances.
“Initially, they said the local council election cost too much. Now, they are trying to play another game with a campaign finance act,” he said.
“There have even been attempts to threaten the members of the election commission to postpone the election. If three commissioners resign, there will be a serious problem,” he said.
Hettiarachchi said elections could also be postponed by appointing new commissioners.
