EC to announce new date for LG elections

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday announced that, on 03 March, it would announce a new date for the conduct of the local council elections.
The EC said that local council elections would not be held on March 09 due to reasons beyond its control. It also decided to approach Parliament through the Speaker, seeking his intervention to make available funds required for the LG polls.
The EC said it would submit a detailed report on all the action it had taken to hold elections.
EC Chairman Nimal G. Punchihewa, and members S. B. Divarathna, M. M. Mohomed and K.G.G. Pathirana, attended the meeting.President Ranil Wickremesingeh told Parliament on Thursday that the EC had not announced the LG polls in a proper manner.
