EC informs SC of its intention to conduct scheduled LG polls

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday (18) informed the Supreme Court that once nominations for Local Government polls closed on January 21, necessary measures would be taken to conduct the local government (LG) polls.

Saliya Pieris, PC, gave this assurance to the SC, on behalf of the EC. The President of the Bar Association appeared for the EC in the wake of Attorney General, Sanjay Rajaratnam, PC, declining to represent the independent commission.

Nominations began yesterday (18).

Saliya Pieris appeared for the EC in two cases, filed by Opposition political parties, requesting the SC to direct the EC to conduct the LG polls (SF)
