Chairman of the Election Commission (EC) Nimal Punchihewa told The Island that the EC will announce the new date for the local government elections only if there was steadfast support from Treasury, Government Printer, IGP, and other institutions.

Punchihewa said that the EC would meet the District Returning Officers before the announcement is made. The EC Chief said so in the wake of Opposition political parties requesting him in writing to conduct the election on or before 20 March.

Punchihewa said the EC had no intention of delaying the polls indefinitely and would not allow the electorla process to be stalled again.
