Easter Sunday carnage: Now Opp. lawmaker says no basis for accusations against GR, BR
Samagi Jana Balavegaya lawmaker Asoka Abeysinghe yesterday (11) admitted that there was no basis for his recent claim SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa and SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa were responsible for 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that Kurunegala District lawmaker has said so when the police questioned him. The SJB MP arrived at the police headquarters, accompanied by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Maddumabandara and MP Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.
When the media questioned MP Abeysinghe outside police headquarters in the afternoon, the former UNPer declined to explain why he had made such a claim.
President’s Counsel Srinath Perera, who accompanied the SJB MP told the media the video footage of his client commenting on the Easter Sunday carnage could have been produced by some interested party.
Opposition Leader Premadasa said that he had accompanied Abeysinghe as it was his responsibility to protect members of his parliamentary group. MP Sarath Fonseka, who had been present when Abeysinghe accused the SLPP of masterminding the Easter Sunday attacks, told the media there were far more important issues than the statement at issue.
