Easter Sunday carnage: ACMC leader, brother move SC against their arrest

The Supreme Court will take up two fundamental rights violation petitions filed by the leader of All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Rishad Bathiudeen (SJB Vanni District) and his brother Riyaj Bathiudeen, tomorrow (8).
The petitioners have alleged unreasonable arrest and detention by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
They were arrested in connection with the 2019 Easter Sunday carnage . A series of suicide bomb attacks, carried out by a group of extremists, led by Zahran Hashim, claimed the lives of 270 and injured more than 500 others.
The petitions were supported by Faiz Mustapha, President’s Counsel appearing with Anil Silva PC, N. M. Shaheed, and Pulasthi Hewamanne.
Deputy Solicitor General Mardhawa Tennekoon, appeared for the Attorney General.
The bench comprised Justice Murdhu Fernando, Justice Achala Wengappuli and Justice Mahinda Samayawardena.
