Dullas calls for affiliation of Colleges of Education to universities

Matara District SLPP dissident MP Dullas Alahapperuma has submitted a private member’s motion seeking parliamentary approval for converting all Colleges of Education into faculties of universities.

Alahappermua’s motion, listed in the latest Addendum to the Order Book of Parliament, says that a Cabinet approval was granted for the same on 13 Feb., 2020.

The motion reads: “This Parliament resolves that necessary action be taken by the Government to enforce the Cabinet decision regarding which the proposal was presented and approval obtained by me on 14ht February 2020 as the Minister of Education to convert the currently functioning 19 Colleges of Education into University Faculties to be suitable for awarding a four-year degree course a with a three-year theoretical course and one-year school-based training, whereas it is necessary to make all the teachers in the schools system into trained graduate teachers in order to upgrade the education in Sri Lanka to the advanced international level, and whereas the majority of teachers are currently awarded a higher diploma at the end of a three-year theoretical and practical course.”
