Dr. Godahewa kicks off Peralanda recreational park construction at Ragama

Peralanda Recreational Park project conceptualized by State Minister of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal and Public Sanitation Nalaka Godahewa in accordance with President Gotabhaya Rajapaka’s Vision for Prosperity & Splendor framework and under the guidance of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, was kicked off on 09th December 2020 near the wetland park in Ragama.

The objectives of this landmark local project are manifold. Uplifting physical and mental hygiene of the people of the locality, avoiding inundating of Ragama town due to flash floods caused by heavy downpours, prevention of unwarranted garbage dumping in the wetland areas and creating livelihood for small entrepreneurs to name a few.

Designing and project planning will be done by Urban Development Authority and the construction will be carried out by Land Reclamation and Development Cooperation. Total extent of Peralanda Recreation Park is about 8 acres and a sum of Rs. 25 million will be allocated by the Land Development Corporation for the first phase of the tank restoration.

The total project estimate is Rs. 130 Million and after clearing the marshland the walking path will be extended up to 2 km. It will be complemented with a children’s park, outdoor physical training unit, sanitation and vehicle parking facilities. Trading huts will also be constructed in order to help local people to earn a living leveraging users of the recreation facility. The project is targeted to be completed within 12 months.

Dr. Godahewa graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Chairman of Urban Development Authority Harshan de Silva, Director General UDA Prasad Ranaweera, officials of Land Reclamation & Development Corporation and local government politicians of the area also participated in the ceremony.
