It’s heartening to see Sri Lankans, domiciled abroad, in the spotlight, showcasing their talents, in their respective fields.

I’ve been highlighting the achievements of many Sri Lankans, doing their country proud, in all corners of the globe.

Well, news have come my way about a fabulous fashion show, organised by Achala Weerasinghe, in the States, and held at the Awards Ceremony of the Sri Lanka Foundation, in Los Angeles.

For the record, the Sri Lanka Foundation is a nonprofit organisation, formed in 2003 by Walter Jayasinghe M.D., a well-known Sri Lankan American physician, in Los Angeles, California.

The Awards Ceremony is an annual event, held in Los Angeles, California, to recognise deserving Sri Lankans, living in the USA, and their annual fashion show is a popular event with the Sri Lankan community, in Los Angeles, as it showcases the Sri Lanka ethic beauty, and culture, to the American audience.

Zorianna: Pursuing a Navy Junior Reserve Officer training course

This year’s event brought into the spotlight Zoriana Dass, as a model, and her mother, Morina Dias, as the featured model.

The outfits they displayed were put together by designers from Sri Lanka – Shanith Fernando and Hiran Wijesekara.

Says Morina, a former beauty queen: “It was really an honour, and very special, as well, to take the runway, this time, with my daughter Zorianna.

“And, I also need to say a special thank you to Nishadi Abeywardena for the gorgeous hairstyle and make up, and to Andy Samarasena and Moran Perera for the beautiful photos, and, of course, The Island newspaper for highlighting Sri Lankan events, held abroad.”

Zorianna, by the way, is a 14-year-old High School student, who was born and raised, in Los Angeles, California, and studying biology.

Modelling is just one of her passionate hobbies.

She is currently pursuing a Navy Junior Reserve Officer training course with the USA Navy, which is part of her extra curriculum in High School. Her current rank is Petty Officer 3rd Class.

Zorianna says her purpose of attaining the Navy training is to be a veterinarian for K-9 dogs (military dogs) in the future, after she finishes her veterinary degree.
