Show cause letters have been issued to two SJB MP for defying a directive to be present in Parliament when a vote was taken on the government’s proposal to remove the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, Janaka Ratnayake last week (24).

The show cause letters were issued to Badulla District SJ MP Vadivel Suresh and Kalutara District MP Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said.

Both the government and Opposition whips informed their MPs that they had to attend the parliamentary session on the 24th.

Both Dr Senaratne and Vadivel Suresh were absent at the time of the vote on May 24 evening where the government’s motion received 123 votes for the motion while the Opposition could muster only 77 votes.

They defied the decision made at the parliamentary group meeting held on May 22 to attend the debate and vote against the government’s motion.
