A special discussion regarding commencement of direct passenger flights from Tel Aviv in Israel to Katunayake was held recently between the civil aviation authorities of the two countries at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation. The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva.

Following comprehensive discussions, the Civil Aviation Authority said that an MOU between the civil aviation authorities of the two countries would be signed soon, and subsequently aircrafts of Israel’s “Arkia” Airline would arrive in Sri Lanka from October.

The minister said that the opportunity to commence direct flights between the two countries came as a result of a discussion between President Ranil Wickramasinghe and the government of Israel.

He said that a large number of Israeli tourists are looking forward to traveling to Sri Lanka and the commencement of this air service would be convenient for Israeli tourists. The minister said that a large number of Sri Lankans working in Israel would also benefit from this move in terms of reduced airfare and direct connectivity.
