Under 19 Cricket

Dineth Goonewardene and skipper Mahith Perera scored centuries and put on a fourth wicket stand of 200 runs as S. Thomas’ posted 322 for six wickets declared against Wesley on day one in the Under 19 Division I Tier ‘A’ tournament match at Mount Lavinia.

It was the second partnership of over 200 runs for the fourth wicket by this pair this month after having amassed a partnership of over 300 runs against St. Benedict’s last week. Deciding to bat first the home team lost three wickets for 44 runs before the reliable pair joined to repeat their last week heroics.

Goonewardene scored 104 runs (in 178 balls) inclusive of 11 fours and a six, while Perera stroked seven fours and two sixes in his 141-ball 103 runs.

In their essay Wesley lost three wickets for 32 runs as Akash Fernando picked up two wickets for 14 runs. The Thomians will be pushing for an outright win to compensate for the early losses in the Tier ‘A’ tournament. They suffered an outright defeat at the hands of St. Sebastian’s and lost first innings advantage to D.S. Senanayake in their last two tournament encounters. Wesley too are yet to enjoy success in the tournament proper.

At Welagedara Stadium, Trinity restricted St. Anne’s to 136 runs as Malith Rathnayake and Tharana Wimaladharma shared seven wickets between them in the Tier ‘A’ match.

Meanwhile, in a Tier ‘B’ match, Lumbini took first innings advantage against Thurstan as 20 wickets fell on day one at Thurstan ground. Lumbini are going great guns after recording an outright victory against Ananda in their first encounter.
