Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena has proposed that there should be a consittutional provision pertaining to the appointment of the Opposition Leader.

The proposal was made at the SLPP parliamentary group meeting in Parliament yesterday (02).

Gunawardena pointed out that the Prime Minister was appointed in keeping the constitutional provisions. Therefore, the Opposition Leader, too, should be appointed in a similar manner.

SLPP National List MP Prof. Charitha Herath too suggested that an MP who commanded the support of the majority of all Opposition members should be chosen as the Opposition Leader. Now, the leader of the political party with the largest number of seats is recognised by the Speaker as the Opposition Leader.

The issue came during the discussion on the proposed 21 Amendment to the Constitution (SF)
