France survived a scare to beat Panama in a nine-goal thriller and finish top of Group F at the Women’s World Cup.

Already eliminated debutants Panama led through Marta Cox’s superb free-kick. But France took control in Sydney, with Kadi Diani scoring a hat-trick, including two penalties.

France also scored through Lea le Garrec, Vicki Becho and an own goal, while Yomira Pinzon and Lineth Cedeno netted Panama’s consolation goals.

France will face the runners up in Group H – possibly Germany – in the last 16, while Panama have suffered defeat in all three games at their first World Cup.
