Former Cabinet minister and ex-general secretary of the Communist party, D.E.W. Gunasekera yesterday said that the worst Cabinet in the parliamentary history of the country was the current dispensation.

Addressing a function, the veteran politician said the biggest crisis faced by the country at the moment was the economic turmoil and the government had no clue about it nor had any solution for it.

While there was a severe economic crisis in the country, the government provided tax concessions to businessmen 14 times so far.

The defaulters didn’t furnish the correct details to the tax authorities and the government revealed details about what would be included in the budget before it was prepared, to businessmen, he said.

Gunasekera said that the government didn’t possess men and women who were able to take correct decisions and it was quite evident from the wrong decisions they had taken, he added.

The sugar, paddy and rice scams, appointment of Ven. Gnanasara to the Presidential Task Force on ‘One Country, One Law”, etc., were some of the key issues that the government had muddled, the veteran Marxist pointed out.

Gunasekera asked whether the government understood that what it was doing was wrong and unethical.
